While at the National Gallery we were lucky enough to be able to see this "cartoon" by Leonardo Da Vinci, The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist. No wonder they call him a master! I just loved the peaceful look on Mary's face.
This large drawing or cartoon is a full-size preparatory study for a painting. It has, however, never been used to transfer a design onto a panel. The outlines are neither pricked nor incised, and the cartoon must have been preserved in its own right as a finished drawing, although some areas are deliberately left inconclusive or in rough outline.
The pretext for the drawing is likely to have been a commission for a painting given to Leonardo by King Louis XII of France. Leonardo started work on this painting in about 1508. It was unfinished at his death and is now in the Louvre, Paris.
