Another exciting picture in National Gallery was this portrait of Sarah Siddons by Thomas Gainsborough.
Sarah Siddons (1755-1831), the outstanding tragic actress of her time, was the daughter of Roger Kemble; she married William Siddons in 1773. Reynolds and other artists also painted her portrait.
There are changes in the portrait to both the nose and the hand. This painting was finished by the end of March 1785.
Jane Austen enthusiasts will recognize her name as a famous actress of the Regency (Jane loved the theater) as well as a central character in the third Jane Austen Mystery by Stephanie Barron, Jane and the Wandering Eye. The Siddons/Kemble family was equal to the Barrymore family of today, with a history of fine acting and a name that could draw crowds.
